Minigrant-funded

Project-based learning is nothing new to career and technical
educators; in fact, hands-on, discovery-based learning has long been
at the heart of daily lessons at Career & Tech.
Cosmetology
students at the Albany campus are learning in real-time using ProScope, a hand-held microscope that scans, magnifies, photographs,
and communicates with a laptop and Smartboard. On a Friday in March,

Snow what!
Just a reminder: In the event of inclement
weather, students and their parents/guardians should follow
school closing information provided by their home high schools.
Students' home school districts determine whether or not to
transport students, end their day early or close their high school
campuses.
Adult students should watch the media for school closings; their
classes are cancelled if the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical
School is closed.
When does a Career
& Tech campus close for snow?
When South Colonie Schools are closed for a snow day, Albany Career
& Tech campus cancels classes. When Schoharie Schools are closed for
a snow day, the Schoharie Career & Tech campus cancels classes.
What about delays?
Effective 12/18/09, when South Colonie School delays two hours,
Albany Career & Tech campus AM ONLY classes are canceled (PM classes
are held as scheduled). When Schoharie School delays two hours,
Schoharie Career & Tech AM ONLY classes are canceled (PM classes are
held as scheduled). Affected faculty and staff (teachers, teaching
assistants, monitors, nurse) are two hours delayed from their normal

A LIFE-CHANGING

From likely dropout to health care professional: Alt Ed turns a life

When Laura's family moved south in 2002, she
chose to remain in the Capital Region with friends to finish her

academic year, her difficulties at the large suburban school
escalated.
She was “two weeks away from dropping out of high school” when she
was accepted into Career & Tech's Alternative Education (Alt. Ed.)
program. Where is she today?

school can be frustrating. Learning disabilities can heighten the
turbulence of the high school years, when students are called upon
to define their future paths. Career & Tech’s courses for special
needs students, or services programs as they are known, provide a
safe place for individuals to learn, grow and mature while building

safe, healthy and clean
Silence your cells please . . .
A reminder: Cell phones should not be used during school.
Parents/guardians needing to reach students should call the school
office - 862-4800 for Albany, 295-3000 for Schoharie. Students' cell

Flu season is here
H1N1/Swine flu: Our school nurses are speaking with our students in
their classrooms, informational letters have been sent to
parents/guardians, and resources are posted on our

partnerships enable Career & Tech to keep apprised of employment needs and
trends. Hundreds of representatives of business, industry and secondary and

Helping out in our
community
Community service is a big part of the Career & Tech experience,
with students and staff supporting many worthy causes throughout the
year. Students lend a hand individually, as part of class projects
and through groups such as SkillsUSA and National Technical Honor
Society. Here's a small sample of what's happening now:
- Career & Tech's Albany campus SkillsUSA Club
hosted their Annual Blood Drive on February 5. Statistics show that
every donation made can save up to three lives and the need for
blood donations is at a all-time high (particularly in light of
recent Global Emergency Relief demands).
SkillsUSA Advisor Gretchen McDonough reports, "More than 57 units of
blood were collected, and we had 35 1st time donors. These numbers
translate into 171 potential lives saved!"
- Helping Haiti:
SkillsUSA is also running a spare change drive in
support of Earthquake Relief in Haiti. The change jar is in the main
office sign-in desk. To date, the students have collected more than
$170.
