New Visions: Human Services
& Special/Elementary Education
Are you someone who reaches out to others?
The New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education program enables high
school seniors to explore careers such as social work, psychology and special
education.
The classroom is located at the Wildwood
School, Curry Road Extension, Schenectady, where students learn through traditional
methods (lecture, reading, research, writing and focused study) and through
rotations. Rotations are structured observations of professionals and
procedures in a career field.
Human Services & Special/Elementary
students rotate through the Wildwood School, community agencies and service
providers which employ professionals such as
special educators, speech therapists, occupational and physical therapists,
psychologists and social workers, psychiatrists and recreational therapists.
Students observe these professionals at work in classrooms for special needs
students. Human Services & Special Education students also learn at
preschools and elementary schools.
The curriculum includes the child welfare
system, culture of the deaf, juvenile justice, and implications of the
Americans with Disabilities Act; explores all types of disabilities; and
teaches the skills needed to be an effective human services worker.
Students will learn American Sign Language
(ASL) and may earn 3 college credits through a partnership with Schenectady County Community College (SCCC).
Through a partnership with Hudson Valley Community College, they may earn an
additional 7 college credits for course work in human services and
disability (see below). The program is a great opportunity to earn 10
college credits and get a jump on your education!
Course credits:
English Honors - 1 credit
Economics Honors - 1/2 credit
Participation in Government Honors - 1/2 credit
Human Services/Special Education Practicum - 1 credit
* Introduction to Human Services Skills - 1/2 credit
* Perspectives on Disability - 1/2 credit
(* college credits available through Hudson Valley Community College; 7
credits total for both courses)
American Sign Language - 3 college credits through Schenectady County
Community College
