Practical Nursing

One of the fastest growing and highest demand jobs in the nation, nursing is the career of ambitious men and women looking for a challenge with many rewards. The state-approved Practical Nursing program at the Capital Region Career & Technical School encompasses 1,100 hours of classroom and clinical study and practice. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the NCLEX Practical Nursing examination for licensure.

The Practical Nursing program covers all levels of patient care and provides hands-on, supervised clinical experiences at local health care facilities. Students are also given a solid foundation to pursue advanced college training. Satisfactory completion of an entrance exam is required for enrollment.

Career attributes:
Practical Nurses are valuable members of the professional medical team, providing basic bedside care to patients. They work under the direction of physicians and registered nurses. Typical duties include:
 - Taking vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration
 - Administering medications, both oral and injection
 - Inserting catheters
 - Collecting data
 - Performing infusion therapy
 - Applying sterile dressings

Career Possibilities:
Hospital staff nurse  (emergency, surgery, cardiac, neuroscience, obstetrics, pediatrics, rehabilitation)
Occupational health nurse
Developmental center nurse
Nursing home nurse
Home care nurse
Physician's office or clinic nurse

Academic Prerequisites:
Score in 25th percentile or above on pre-entrance exam

Professional Requirements:
CPR
Textbook and nurse pack
Wristwatch with second hand
Name tag
Male students - White pants & white shirt, white shoes & white socks
Female students - White uniform or white pants & white shirt, white stockings, smock (purchase through program)
